Ring Light

Becca - Ring Flash
Becca with a Ring Flash
I bought an "Orbis Ring Flash" a few months ago, but only recently had a chance to really give it a try while shooting a few head shots for Becca.

A ring light is a light that goes around the camera lens. It's shaped like a donut and produces nearly shadowless light on a subject's face. I like the look.

Ring lights have been used by the fashion industry for years. Some photographers use it as a "fill light" meaning that it's used to fill in the shadows created by the photographer's main light source. In Becca's photo above, I used it alone as the main light.

Ring lights often create a ring-shaped highlight in subject's eyes. Unfortunately, I didn't get that effect in Becca's photo. I learned from my photographer friend Alex Suarez that you have to use a wide angle lens close to the subject's face to get the "ring" effect. I'll have to give that a try the next time I get a chance.
